Tell Me Something Good: Anthony Elementary
While conducting a teaching and learning audit for Chaparral Schools, I spent time at Anthony Elementary School observing classrooms and meeting with both teachers and students and what I witnessed was special.
From the moment you walk in, there is a strong sense of care, belonging, and purpose. Teachers greet students by name, classrooms are calm and focused, and learning feels intentional rather than rushed. Clear routines support learning, but it is the relationships that truly drive the environment. Students feel safe, supported, and confident enough to ask questions, take risks, and help one another grow.
The students said it best:
"I feel comfortable talking to them and asking about anything.”
“Teachers notice me, not just my learning. They care about the little things.”
“No one is alone here. I can connect with anyone in the school without it being awkward.”
That emotional safety carries directly into learning.
Across every classroom, ESSDACK observed strong, thoughtful instruction paired with high engagement and active learning. Foundational literacy is being taught with consistency in the primary grades, and students were actively involved using anchor charts, classroom resources, rich vocabulary, and meaningful discussion to deepen understanding. Learning was not passive, kids were collaborating, talking through their thinking, and applying skills in real ways. Teachers also intentionally modeled social emotional skills throughout the day, reinforcing respect, kindness, and responsibility as a natural part of everyday learning.
When meeting with teachers, their professionalism and commitment to students and the community was clear. There is a shared sense of responsibility for every child and a genuine desire to continually grow and improve practice.
Anthony Elementary is a beautiful example of what happens when strong relationships, intentional instruction, and a caring school environment come together to support students academically and emotionally.
