Mark Calvin
Propel & Learning Center Director
Growing up in a high-poverty environment, life wasn’t always easy, but a turning point fro Mark came in high school. Thanks to the profound impact of his US History teacher, Mrs. Bowman, he found his calling and decided to become an educator.
Driven by the belief that every child deserves a champion, he went on to teach grades 7–12 in three states and across three content areas. His commitment to inclusivity was truly forged in the classroom. While teaching in Garden City, Kansas, he managed a remarkably diverse classroom of students speaking more than 20 languages.
As an educator who refuses to turn any student away, he once spearheaded a classroom of 38 students, seamlessly collaborating with three 1-on-1 paraprofessionals to ensure no one was left behind.
"I have been the kid who didn't have a place to go. I refuse to allow that to happen to another kid on my watch."
In November 2019, he brought this fierce advocacy to ESSDACK as the Haysville Learning Cafe Site Director. Under his leadership, his team has maintained exceptionally high post-diploma success rates. They also consistently collaborate with an international career-training company, ensuring students not only graduate but also thrive in the modern workplace.
Always looking to expand their impact, he and his team of dedicated educators are currently leading initiatives in virtual adult diploma education, the RESTORE program, Alternative Teens, and English as a Second Language (ESL). At home, he is blessed with a full and vibrant life alongside his wife, Kelly, their four children, and six grandchildren.
