Peg’s Story
Peg’s dedication to the teaching profession finds her serving as a literacy consultant at ESSDACK. She facilitates learning in Pathways to Reading, a powerful model whose primary focus is to guide teachers in their understanding and application of the five scientifically validated components of the reading process. Peg’s forte is collaborating with educators and assisting districts with reading coaching, differentiated instruction, and data analysis.

A deep interest in the reading process and ensuring success for all students as readers has been at the heart of Peg’s purpose as a classroom teacher. Her ongoing quest for knowledge and best practices in literacy developed into a passion to empower fellow educators to impact students and therefore our world. Sharing with teachers the Science of Reading and how to put that knowledge into practical application in the classroom is Peg’s mission.

Prior to coming to ESSDACK, Peg taught first grade in Valley Center, Kansas for 12 years. While in the first grade classroom, Peg helped hundreds of students become confident readers, writers, and problem solvers. One of her favorite parts of teaching was when students came to her and said with total surprise, “I didn’t know I could read. Did you know I could read?”  Before Valley Center, Peg had an opportunity to run a preschool from her home. Focusing on the whole child gave Peg the opportunity to teach early numeracy, early literacy pre-reading skills, and social-emotional skills.
Peg’s desire to learn as much as possible for her students led her to a Master of Education degree from Baker University. Arriving at ESSDACK in 2020, Peg’s passion  is for empowering teachers to continually grow and therefore positively impact students. She’s at her best working alongside educators as they strive to meet the literacy needs of all students.
